Recovery After Eyelid Surgery, A Week by Week Guide for Dubai Patients

One of the most practical concerns for patients considering eyelid surgery is planning the recovery. How long will you need off work? When can you drive? When will the swelling be gone? When can you exercise again? This guide gives you a realistic, week-by-week picture of what recovery from blepharoplasty or ptosis repair typically looks like.

Every patient heals differently, and your surgeon's specific post-operative instructions take precedence over any general guide. This is intended as a framework for planning, not a substitute for personalized medical advice.

Day 1 to 2, Immediately post-surgery

You will go home on the same day as surgery. The eyelids will be swollen, bruised, and may feel tight. This is entirely normal and expected. Vision may be slightly blurred due to antibiotic ointment applied at the end of surgery. Cold compresses applied gently for 10 to 15 minutes at a time help significantly with swelling and discomfort.

Rest with your head elevated, use an extra pillow at night. Avoid bending forward, straining, or lifting anything heavy. Do not rub or press on the eyes. Prescription eye drops or ointment will be prescribed and should be used as directed.

Days 3 to 5, Peak swelling

Swelling typically peaks around day 3 before beginning to subside. Bruising may spread slightly downward, this is normal. The eyelids may feel stiff or difficult to open fully. Most patients find this the most uncomfortable phase, though significant pain is uncommon. Paracetamol is usually sufficient for any discomfort; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen as they can increase bleeding.

Sutures, if non-dissolving, are typically removed between day 5 and day 7. This is a quick, comfortable procedure performed in the clinic.

Week 1 to 2, Returning to daily activities

Most patients with desk-based work return after 5 to 7 days. Swelling and bruising are still visible at this stage but are reducing. Eye makeup should not be worn until your surgeon confirms the wounds are fully healed, typically around day 10 to 14.

Driving should not resume until vision is fully clear and you feel confident, typically after day 7 at the earliest, but follow your surgeon's specific guidance. Avoid swimming, contact sports, and any activity that risks impact to the eye area.

Weeks 2 to 4, Continued improvement

By week two, the majority of bruising has resolved for most patients. Swelling continues to reduce more gradually. The eyelids may still look slightly puffy or asymmetric, asymmetric healing between the two sides is common at this stage and typically resolves.

Light exercise including walking can usually resume by week two. Avoid strenuous gym work, heavy lifting, and anything that significantly elevates heart rate or blood pressure for at least three weeks.

Weeks 4 to 6, Approaching final results

By week six, most patients are at approximately 80 to 90 percent of their final result. Residual swelling continues to resolve slowly. Scars, which are placed within the natural lid crease, are maturing and typically become difficult to detect at this stage.

Full activities including swimming and all exercise can generally resume by week four to six. Sunscreen over the scar area is advisable when outdoors, particularly important in Dubai's climate, to prevent pigmentation of healing skin.

Three months and beyond

Final results are typically fully visible at three months, when all residual swelling has resolved and the scars have fully matured. For the vast majority of patients, the result at this stage is a natural, refreshed appearance that others notice as looking rested and bright-eyed without being able to identify why.

Planning around Dubai life

If you are planning surgery around a specific event, a wedding, a trip, a significant occasion, aim for at least six weeks between surgery and the event. This gives adequate time for the most visible signs of recovery to resolve, and allows for any minor adjustments in the healing process. Surgery during or immediately after Ramadan requires specific consideration regarding fasting and activity restrictions, discuss this timing with your surgeon.
